I'm A Grandfather Again!

Postby Ron Thorne » May 15th, 2014, 6:12 pm

About 1½ hours ago, our 5th grandchild was born, a son to our son Justin, & his wife Rika. The baby, as yet unnamed, weighed 7lbs. 13oz., and is healthy, sporting a full head of hair according to Justin. He was born about two weeks ahead of schedule, so surprised all of us a bit.

Justin (jtx) is responsible for the appearance and functionality of this website, as some of you may already know.

Patti & I are over the moon, and can't wait until we can hold and kiss our new grandbaby in a couple of weeks.

Congratulation, Ron! I hope the time goes by quickly. A cousin and her husband had their first on April 7 and I got to cuddle and feed her last Saturday and she was so sweet, well tempered and perfectly formed it was a joy to behold. Her hair is reddish blonde and looked like she had stuck her finger in a light socket - lol. I thought it was static electricity from the storms we'd been having, but was assured that, no, that is how her hair goes despite their best efforts. Kind of mohawky - very, er, 1980s... Congrats again. Let us know when you have a name. My cousins' baby's name is Madelyn. :)

Thanks!

Hey, his grandfather and father are drummers, so it's not beyond the realm of possibilities. 8-)

Thanks, Chazro. Yes, being a grandparent is an extraordinary gift.

We were able to see Justin, Rika, and our newest little Thorne character via Skype last night. What a wonderful bit of technology! He was sleeping soundly, but it was wonderful to see him in real time, with his Dad stroking his little cheeks in an attempt to gently wake him for us. Didn't work.

He'll have a name within the next 48 hours. It's a very daunting task.

Justin and Rika have named their son after much deliberation. First, some backstory. The first name was one they talked about several months ago while adding many new suggestions to the growing list. Today, they returned to it and decided upon it as well as a middle name.

First name: Kai (pronounced Ky)
Middle name: Stuart

There is symbolism in each name. Kai, in both Hawaiian and Japanese means ocean or ocean waters. Rika's birthplace is a small island in Japan, and the Pacific Ocean is what connects her island with other larger islands of Japan, Hawaii and California, as well as Alaska where Justin was born. Kai shares 3 of 4 letters in Rika's name.

Stuart is another name they had placed on the short list some time ago. Justin liked the name for its origins as well as the fact that it has six letters (same as Justin) and shared 3 of the same letters as his name.

So, our new grandson was named Kai Stuart Thorne today.

We've added a character to Kai's spelling in Japanese to add some distinction which I suspect everyone here will appreciate. The two characters we are using are sea + sound. The character for sound is the first character in the Japanese word for music, and underscores my hope for the boy to have an appreciation for music:

Thanks for the additional info, Justin. It's a great name choice for many reasons.

Gee, do you think that Kai can avoid being immersed in music? :music: Chopsticks can be a good substitute for little drumsticks. ;)

I already gave him a quick rhythm listening exercise at the dinner table tonight, tapping bowls, plates and glasses for him.
