Songs for Drunks, Losers, and Other Assorted Insomniacs

Postby cookie » November 21st, 2013, 1:29 pm

My dream job is playing in a Las Vegas dive piano bar from 2--5 AM. I want to sing noire songs about carrying torches, or longing, loss, cocktails, cigarettes and angst in the wee small hours. What songs should I play? Certsinly "One for My Baby....

How about some 70s Tom Waits like Heart of Saturday Night?

Definitely would do Waits. "Bad Liver and a Broken Heart" comes to mind.

"Lush Life" would be my theme.

Why do I want to do this? Yes, a kind of catharsis I guess. Sick of moon, June, spoon, swoon. Want to express the dark side.

You want to experience that gig - until you didn't. But do you really think you want it as your day in day out thing? I guess it's really hard to know unless you do it.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Also, based on the thread title...

Thelil: it is my dream. I love the "complex" emotions of dark songs. I'd love to get paid to be a skeptical curmudgeon and hopeless romantic wreck!

I hear you. I have no doubt you love singing those songs. That's not what I was getting at. I just wonder whether the people you'd be playing for in a Vegas lounge overnight would ultimately bum you out. I have no idea.

Sorry about posting the picture. I just thought it would be a human interest story to show LeBron autographing my butt. I'll never wash that cheek again.

I'd be the guy at the bar yelling requests. Anything by Stephen Foster.

It was me, Charlie, it was me. I wanted to be somebody. I coulda been a contender. But it was me.

BTW, I've seen that photo so many times for so long I didn't even "see" the nudity so my apologies.

Hey, does that include topless Renaissance models in paintings too?

I *love* drunks, losers, insomniacs, junkies and even guys who request Stephen Foster. I'd sing "Camptown Races" (in honor of those who lose at the OTB).

"Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming." That's the one that always gets me crying loudly and hysterically until I get sullen and abusive. I wouldn't expect a lounge singer to understand my pain. Check please! Hiccough. [Sick].

LOL!!

Now, the Camptown Races gut actually wins on the bay, but that would kind of rub it in.

When I applied for my retail job, they asked if I'd be able to handle irate customers. I told 'em I could deal with drunks (part of my experience as a lounge singer). They seemed to think that was a unique response.
