How's this for an amazing lineup. It's on August 10th, as part of the all free Lincoln Centers Out of Doors Fest:

Nick Lowe

Jason Isbell

Rockin' Rockabilly Revue with James Burton, Charlie Gracie, Sleepy LaBeef, Johnny Powers, and Gene Summers
Sat, August 10, 6:00pm
Damrosch Park Bandshell
LOCATI

To be honest, I'm not even familiar with Isbell, but I know I should be and will check him out.

I've seen Nick Lowe a few times in the last decade and he is both a remarkable songwriter and showman. He's the big draw for me. And an all-star rockabilly band with James Burton is also a big deal, IMHO.

My wife and I frequently note that the best free shows we've seen have topped the best expensive shows!

Turns out I do have some familiarity with Jason Isbell. I didn't realize he was from the Drive By Truckers. I once saw them at a free show and really enjoyed it.

One of my favorite live bands is the Subdudes, who seemed to play a lot of free outdoor shows. I've probably seen them for free 4 times and in a club only once.

My appreciation of the Subdudes peaked when I saw them play for free in the Capitol (NY) District when I lived there. I saw them during a 10 day period in which I also saw free shows by Los Lobos (Washington Park in Albany) and the Neville Brothers (Corning Preserve in Albany). And I remember thinking they were as good and/or I enjoyed them more than the other 2 bands. Bizarrely, I can't recall where they played. It's possible I saw them at a NOLA festival at SPAC (Saratoga) and that it wasn't a free show.

;)

Learn the lingo, rookie!

The only band who I know by their initials is VPL .

It's a mostly imaginary group i formed with my nieces and nephews. We were proud of being the only imaginary group that consisted of a singer/guitarist, bass player, fashion designer, manager and poet (who was only a part-time member)

Oh yeah. It stands for Visible Panty Line.

Saw this show last night, the kickoff to the Lincoln Center Out of Doors series.

This year the first week is a celebration of KRONOS AT 40

Red Hot + FELA LIVE! (world premiere)
featuring Tony Allen and Superhuman Happiness

with Baloji, Abena Koomson, Kronos Quartet, M1 (of dead prez), Sahr Ngaujah, Sinkane, and Alex Toth and Kalmia Traver (of Rubblebucket)
Musical Director: Stuart Bogie

Superhuman Happiness: Music from How to Survive a Plague (world premiere)

The show was really excellent. The music and the crowd were both wonderfully diverse, and it was magical on a perfect summer night.

This has been a really important and FUN part of the Jazz Festival Season for me for many many years.

This year's thier 30th annivarsary, just as it was for The Burlington Discover Jazz Festival...

Fear of being rained on caused me to miss a free gig with Dr John the other night.
