Those are some wonderful-looking recordings, Ralf. Smoke seems to have done a very tasteful job with them.

I just received this direct from the label (Yolk Records in France) and am a couple of tracks in. This is a really interesting environment for Ellery since these guys have a whole different esthetic than his recent releases. It's Jozef Dumoulin on keyboards (Fender Rhodes), Dan Weiss on drums & Ellery but it's a whole different vibe than the Trio NY from the recent past. I really like this and will be giving it some serious listening in the near future.

I've had some more time with the Dumoulin disc mentioned above and I am loving it. I've also had some time with a couple of other recent arrivals that are a nice contrast:

HenryMc, in the thread recs for a jazz newbie, wrote:A friend has asked me for some recs for jazz. I have a list that reflects my tastes and thought I'd ask here if anyone has a suggestion (one or two ) of recordings out of left field that a person coming to jazz from dance and trance may dig

I was revisiting and considering these two:

My conclusions: Ask the Ages—nope, not a good rec for HenryMc's friend. Dancing in Your Head—yeah, maybe. Depends on how much weight (if any) the "dance and trance" factor should get.

Marc Hannaford - piano
Scott Tinkler - Trumpet
Ellery Eskelin - Sax
Tom Rainey - Drums

I missed this release last year, but caught onto it from Ellery's blog http://elleryeskelin.blogspot.ca/. This is some very nicely played open form improv of the sort that Ellery and Tom Rainey seem so natural at. Hannaford and Tinkler are new names to me, but I will be looking for them in the future.

Ron: I was at Smalls for the first time in a while on Saturday to see their late afternoon/early evening jam session. A good time with some great players. Unfortunately (for me) nobody was introduced.

Too bad that there weren't introductions of band members, Steve. That's a pet peeve of mine. Glad you enjoyed yourself, however. Smalls is really solid in its presentations, in my view.

I sort of get it in the Smalls Jam Session, since there was a "nucleus group" that played on most songs, with many other people coming and going. But it would be nice to know who the nucleus group was - they seemed like real serious players.
