I always enjoy the title track of this recording, especially at this time of year. I believe it was the 1st album on which Coltrane played soprano saxophone.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHVarQbNAwU

Thank you, Ron! That should be a wonderful present---Dolphy and all! But I'm pretty certain that "Jazztalkers" is already gender-neutral.

Humph. Christmas is more than a week away; Hanukkah, on the other hand, began tonight. So for those who are celebrating Hanukkah and everyone else . . .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpW1b1yAeqw

Here's a very tasteful treatment of "Like Sonny" by the Hal Galper Trio, from a recent gig at The Blue Whale in L.A..
Drummer John Bishop (0rigin Records) assured a fine recording.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwbsqTVxIvY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saN1BwlxJxAIt's a day late for MLK Day, but "So What." Thanks to Doug Ramsey, who posted the video yesterday in this entry in his blog, Rifftides:Martin Luther KingJanuary 19, 2015 by Doug RamseyIn remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on the national holiday dedicated to his leadership of the civil rights movement, here is the John Coltrane Quartet playing Coltrane’s "Alabama." The performance is from Ralph J. Gleason’s Jazz Casual television series.[the video]John Coltrane, tenor saxophone; McCoy Tyner, piano; Jimmy Garrison, bass; Elvin Jones, drums.
Coltrane made the initial recording of "Alabama” on November 19, 1963, two months following the white supremacist bombing of the 16th Street Baptist church in Birmingham. Four girls—three of them 14 years old, one 11—died in the blast, leading King to wire Alabama Governor George Wallace,
… the blood of four little children … is on your hands. Your irresponsible and misguided actions
have created in Birmingham and Alabama the atmosphere that has induced continued violence
and now murder.
It was a crucial event in the movement for federal civil rights legislation, which passed in 1964. Dr. King was assassinated in 1968.

Here's a clip of Mexican jazz singer Iraida Noriega and me performing Hijo de la Luna with Roberto Falcón on bass, Jesús Estrada on drums and Dale Carley on trumpet. There was supposed to be a flute player for my arrangement, but he had food poisoning and had to be rushed to the ER 5 minutes before the downbeat!
