I'm on a Carmen McRae kick, using Spotify to discover albums I either hadn't known or rediscover ones I had known.

"Carmen McRae Sings 'Lover Man' and Other Billie Holiday Classics" from 1961 is a killer. I'm also impressed with another 1961 album, "Take Five Live," which she recorded with the Dave Brubeck trio (no Desmond), singing Brubeck songs with lyrics by Iola Brubeck, the missus.

I remember learning about Tardo Hammer a million years ago on Jazz Central Station when DEEP had a falling out with his pianist. Tardo was the new guy and DEEP said Tardo was MUCH better. And DEEP , as we all know, was the last person to hold a grudge. (As well as the first)

The clips on amazon sound really really awful, though.

I didn't think the samples on eMusic sounded bad at all. Definitely on my purchase short-list. I haven't heard anything from Andrea recently and I'm really looking forward to hearing the entire disc.

Went to see two guys play last night who were half of this quartet and picked up this CD. Includes Jack Wright who sounds like a very interesting dude. I was talking to Elwood Epps (the trumpet player) and he was describing Jack as an old musical anarchist in the best sense of the word, that can only be a good thing!!

I know this kid from Musicians on Call, where she guides musicians through a hospital oncology unit interacting with staff and going room to room asking patients if they'd like to hear a musician play for them. At age 11 she won an essay contest and was flown to South Africa to meet Nelson Mandela. Her essay is taught in schools and there's a scholastic books lesson play for it on the net. Her songwriting is in the same league as her singing. In person she is bright, modest and sweet.

So don't just look at her as another TV Karaoke contest babe or I will get my driver to break your legs*. Khaya hadn't even SEEN the X Factor but friends convinced her to send in an audition video for kicks. Well she's the discovery of the season, and her real interest is in old school r&B and singer songwriter stuff more than pop star stuff. (Although she can sound just like Amy Winehouse, as she did the previous night with a rendition of the Motown chestnut My Girl, see below). The first embedded video is from last night.

* I don't really have a driver. I just thought that sounded like a good mobster threat.
