Re: Jazz on Sale

Discount CDs? How passé! Isn't everyone on Spotify or some equivalent by now? ;-)

Re: Dick Van Dyke's Jaguar Burns

I used to enjoy the Dick Van Dyke Show when I was a tot. I remember thinking it was strange that the couple played by Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore slept in separate beds.

Re: Dave Holland and New Quartet, Prism

Has anybody heard the record? I'm one of the few (indeed, perhaps the only person in the entire world) who never particularly enjoyed that "Extensions" album with Eubanks from--my God--practically a quarter-century ago. I like my jazz guitar jazzier than that. I know Eubanks is a chameleon...

Re: Return to the index page

Well goddamn, so it does. I had always clicked the link before that happened.

But it means you have to wait TWO SECONDS! An outrage.

Re: Acoustic or Electric?

A related topic to this one is amplification. An acoustic piano, for example, that is being cranked out through mikes and speakers at earsplitting volume to an arena sounds nothing like the same piano in a small club, even if the pianist is delicately tickling the keys. Is there really a difference,...

Return to the index page

When you log into JT, it says: "Information - You have been successfully logged in." Then a link: "Return to the index page." This extra step annoys me no end. There's no need to remove us from the index page to begin with. Other forums don't do this--you log in and boom, there y...

Re: Acoustic or Electric?

I prefer an acoustic sound, if I had to choose; but I'm glad I don't have to choose, since there is so much great electric/electronic music. For me an important distinction is between a band with a strong electric feel in the rhythm section and one where an electric instrument such as guitar or bass...

Ornette Coleman's health... ?

Just saw a Facebook comment to the effect that Ornette is "quite ill." Anybody hear anything about that?

Re: Convince me otherwise please?

Steve Coleman's music leaves me cold. I love his saxophone playing. He has a sound that I love. But something about his music strikes me as static and stiff. Rhythmically I hear it as tense but lacking drama or development. I know there is much about it that probably goes over my head, but that's ho...

Re: Convince me otherwise please?

It took me a while to appreciate Turner but I'm a big fan now. His music has a certain ascetic quality that I'm not always in the mood for, but one thing I like is that he's pretty much devoid of cliché. I saw him last year with Avishai Cohen (the trumpeter), can't recall the bassist, Marcus Gilmore...

Music: literary or painterly?

This question occurred to me recently: Is listening to a piece of music more like reading a story or looking at a painting? A friend of mine is very focused on sound quality. He can't really appreciate music unless the sound quality is excellent. I think he falls more on the "looking at a paint...
