Re: Clues

Ron, A roundabout answer. I haven't watched television (or movies) since 1978. When people find out, they often say "Oh, I don't watch TV either, except for PBS (Public Broadcasting)"...as if that is somehow better than whatever else. I guess they feel special. My first shopping experience...

DC-area Safeway stores: If you can barely keep certain items in stock because they sell out so quickly, maybe you should order them in greater quantities rather than discontinue them . Yeah, I can relate to this. I used to go to the pathetic Safeway near Foggy Bottom/Watergate - convenient, but tha...

Re: Skopje (Republic of Macedonia) Jazz Fest | Oct. 16–19, 2

My wife really liked Skopje. (Keep in mind, we were "tourists", though I was working days.) Really laid-back among the water. Nice cafes and some restaurants. Wish I could go again.

We'd come from Tirana, which we also loved, but the living was definitely easier in Macedonia.

If my flight is on time and I have a bit of time before I'm due at work, I'm hoping to catch my old friend Noel Jewkes on Saturday.

Re: Jazz in Philadelphia

Thanks for the link, Ron. It's the best resource I've seen. If I come across anything better, I'll post it. Unfortunately, my work rampoed up quickly and my opportunity to get to a concert disappeared before it appeared.

Jazz in Philadelphia

In town for two weeks. I'm aware of Chris' from previous visits, and I know Ortlieb's is now gone/non-jazz. Tonight I'm working and missing Uri Caine and Dave Douglas at Ars Nova. Drag.

So...any other decent jazz places?

For people in the check out line: Eventually you're going to have to pay for all those thing you're buying. That means money or some other form of payment. Give it a little thought, maybe even prepare by pulling out your wallet, before someone insists.

Clues

Post them here, for the good of all mankind. Restaurants: If a lone businessperson comes in with an armload of papers OR a pair of business people come in. Do not seat them between the family with six loud children and the birthday party for the14 year old girl. Same rule for people who are on a fir...

Re: Charlie Haden RIP

Thanks, Charlie Haden.

One of a select group of bassists that was, for me, much more than a keeper of the pulse.

I was surprised to hear of his passing on the local AM news station in California. His legacy with the general public must be closer to what it merits than I thought.

Re: Non One-Hit-Wonders who never topped first LP

I agree with Devo and Elvis Costello. Most of the others I don't know well enough. In the rock world, I think Led Zeppelin's first was as good as the band got...though other albums surely came close.

In jazz, Louis Smith.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk at Keystone Korner, San Francisco, circa 1974. That was three remarkable live saxophone (stritch, manzello...) performances, all at the same time.

Re: Detroit Jazz Festival | August 29 – September 1, 2014

I haven't been in Detroit to attend in a decade now. That's unfortunate. The lineup this year - like virtually every year - is attractive. More appealing than Monterey or SFJazz or Lincoln Center (though the latter two make poor comparatives, since they are oriented to full seasons of performance.) ...

I just like a good parade and always want to be part if it when I see one. I don't much care who the majorette is, though a pretty one is nice. (All three of you guys qualify under that criteria.)
