Re: Beer — "all things malty and frothy"

Indeed, lots of vegetarian beers out there: http://www.barnivore.com/beer/s-t

The trick is walking into a monastery/brewery, speaking no Flemish and figuring it all out.

Re: The Beer Thread

I love beer. Or the memory of beer, anyway. (Before the vegetarian thing put an end to that .) I brewed back in the 70s. It felt like real craftsmanship. Smelled like it too. Even to this day, I'll "tour" microbreweries, if they're willing to chat about the art. Yeah, I miss it. I just en...

Thanks for the link, pig pen. Cover band, in extremis. Something like the fifties dixieland revival bands or the re-enactors of the big bands era (Enoch Light)?

I've been to Portland ME a couple of times, but on those trips where I don't see or experience anything. it's a place I want to get back to, maybe when I retire. Enjoy it!

Re: Only in Alaska!

You (Ron) were the first person I thought of when I heard the news. I grew up in earthquake country and I know a 6.2 can have consequences. Glad to hear that all is reasonably well. I haven't been through anything over San Francisco area's Loma Prieta (7.2?), which I rode out on a train under the Bay.

A Music Hall might serve you well. Perhaps not this one (arm? cartridge? ... though it is cheap), but a Music Hall. Modern design. This even has USB output.

Re: Turntables

It's a fine turntable. I had a TD160, a stone-reliable apparatus. I can't speak to the price on this TD165 or the pairing of the Ortofon with the Thorens arm. I'd take the claims about the stylus with a grain of salt (as I'm sure you do); tough to say what it's been through, even if it's not many ho...

I don't buy recordings* any more. If I did, though... I love Hampton Hawes like Teddy Edwards and Howard McGhee (not so much most Sonny Criss, though he has good outings too; wish it had been Dex or Wardell) and Roy Porter - after reading his bio -> http://www.amazon.com/There-Back-The-Porter-Story/...

Can't help but mention Jim Alfredson's latest project: http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/theo

Prog rock outing for the "Organissimo guy". Friend of mine and perhaps of other folks here too.

It's a Kickstartr-like fund drive.

(That's about as hard-sell as I get. ;) )

Re: Turntables

WAY before I had any interest in high-quality music reproduction I was a hardcore music-lover! In retrospect, my 1st 'audiophile' purchase was a pair of AKG 240 headphones. Before all the gear I eventually bought, it was just me, my records, a record-player, a receiver, and my headphones! Never tho...

Re: Turntables

Back in the '90s, I was still (30 years on) listening almost exclusively to LPs, and mostly with headphones. I found and a nice little tube phono preamp with headphone output (a prototype at this point) and really enjoyed it. Within a few years, the music world was hit with three (enduring) throwbac...

Re: Turntables

Not to draw discussion off-track, but I've noticed a lot of new-to-vinyl/returning-to-vinyl people listen mostly or exclusively through headphones. If you have that tendency, let me know and I'll share another idea. Otherwise, Ron's advice is good.

Re: Turntables

I would second Ron's AudioAdvisor suggestion. If you buy from them, you'll get something properly set-up. Watch for specials and closeouts. If you get their e-mails, there are frequent coupons. Just to clarify on the amplification, no matter what turntable/cartridge you get, you will need a phono pr...

I've got great memories of Palmer, including a red haired guy with a red haired dog who ran the B&B where I stayed during a job up there. And monster vegetables. And midnight hikes between the days of my day job.

Re: Turntables

I've owned my trusty old Linn LP12/Lingo/Ittok for close to 25 yrs without a problem. They can be a bit pricey though so it's probably not what yr looking for. The one bit of advice I'd offer is to be careful with your records! A bad TT/cartridge can do irreversible damage to them! TT's can come an...

Re: Turntables

I liked my Thorens TD160 and my Connoisseur BD103 and loved my Regal Planar 3. Be sure to factor in the price of a tonearm, if not included, a cartridge and PROPER set up. Tools to do your own set up aren't terribly expensive, maybe US$60. If you buy new, you can get a package (turntable, cartridge,...
