Re: Big Bands
My late friend, Bob, was one of the directors of the Tonite Show. A couple of times we were invited to come by in the afternoon and hear Doc's big band rehearse. That was some ensemble who could play their asses off. Amongst the monsters were Ross Tompkins, Bob Cooper, Snooky Young, Tommy Newsom and...

Re: What TV Shows Are You Watching?
We have enjoyed Brooklyn 99, sophomoric, sexist humor that requires no grey cells. We just find it fun. Of the dramas on networks we have enjoyed Good Wife and Major Crimes, recorded of course. Usually we find something on one the four PBS stations we receive. Most of which don't insult our intellig...

It's very good but the long version is even better. It's one of Bergman's best.

Team which will finish better: San Diego (maybe win), White Sox (will win), Cubs (not as embarrassing), Seattle, Miami.

Buddy was the first clarinetist I can recall who truly played bebop. He gave us so much. He'll be featured during our cocktail hour tonight.

I enjoy good plots, active and writing where the flick producers do no have to rely of computerized special effects to make a flick enjoyable.
"August: Osage County" was the last current flick I saw that was that kind of click.

We check them out when they get on cable. We don't go to theaters for flicks because of the ill-mannered clods who seem to be in every theater.
Watched "Swing Time" last night and "Big" the other night. Both are superior to anything out today.

We watched "Smiles On A Summer Night" last night. This is a wonderful flick. I think Bergman was influenced by Der Rosencavalier. Of course he probably cohabited with all those beautiful ladies in the flick at some time. Woody Allen, Steven Sondheim and probably a few others used this grea...

Preservation Hall Band changes their tune
Last Saturday we took an old friend to a Preservation Hall Band concert in Irvine. We've heard the band several times, especially in the dump they inhabit in N.O. We expected to hear the traditional two beat N.O. style jazz. They had a co-star, Allen Toussaint. who joined the ensemble. Well, he brou...

When you think how [relatively] soon the team goes back into winter/spring training for the winning club, it's tough to regroup for back to back runs. Mind you in the age of free agency tough to field the same or similar squad, which has been the key to Giants success having been able to retain cor...
