Recently was listening to the wonderful work of Butch Warren on Joe Henderson's "Page One," and was subsequently saddened to learn that he died just this past week or so.

Re: Who doesn't like "mainstream" jazz?
I don't think I "stylistically" compared Bud Powell to Cecil Taylor. I made a reference to mainstream jazz and free jazz. Nor did I say I "hated" anyone. I said I preferred certain styles over what might be called "mainstream" jazz. As to Bud Powell, I think it is prett...

Re: Blues, boogie-woogie and stride piano
This looks like the entire video from which that Jaki Byard piece came.
It's a live 1965 jazz piano workshop in Berlin.
Earl Hines, Teddy Wison, John Lewis, Lennie Tristano, Bill Evans and Jaki Byard. Amazing!

Re: Blues, boogie-woogie and stride piano
Thanks for reminding me to dig more deeply into Otis Spann.
One of my favorite jazz pianists is Jaki Byard, in part because he would often use some stride technique in his playing. You can hear it after about 5min into this video.

Blues, boogie-woogie and stride piano
Been listening to Robert Shaw and James Booker recently.
Saw that Henry Gray, at 88, is still playing.

Almost halfway through Jonathan Franzen's Freedom and haven't yet figured out why it's a good book.

Re: Who doesn't like "mainstream" jazz?
I am probably more in love with blues and early jazz than I am love with mainstream jazz or free jazz.
I'll take Joe Sullivan most any day over Cecil Taylor, or, God help me, even Bud Powell.

Just learning a little jazz piano, and I thought I might benefit from chatting with the jazz experts on this board.
