Re: What Are You Listening To?
I missed it when this came out and just became aware of it today.
I enjoyed their September Trio album but this one is kicking off with a lot more fire. Ellery's smokin on the first track.

Re: What Are You Listening To?
I'm not familiar with that group but I did listen to a few samples on eMusic and they sounded funky almost somewhere between fusion and smooth, is that a fair representation of them or did I just hear some lame samples? I don't think they fall into the smooth category, by any definition. I suppose ...

Re: Can you drive a manual transmission?
I have had several manual transmission-equipped vehicles but I don't currently (the real boss doesn't like them). I kind of miss the feeling of having more control over the vehicle but most of the time I don't think about it. I am considerably above your 35yo cutoff point though, so I'm not sure I'm...

Another blindfold test ... Albert "Tootie" Heath
I laughed out loud at a few of his comments and while he was critical of a few pieces I thought he maintained a generally positive vibe.

Re: What Are You Listening To?
It's new on Concord Records. Very good, very similar to the their other recordings. I'm not familiar with that group but I did listen to a few samples on eMusic and they sounded funky almost somewhere between fusion and smooth, is that a fair representation of them or did I just hear some lame samp...

I guess it's all a question of perception, but I find a lot of all of those things in many recent recordings that I have.

Re: Monk saxophone competition
Interesting perspective from Spike Wilner: I want to give a special congratulations to Melissa Aldan, Tivon Pennicott and Godwin Louis for their success in this year's Thelonious Monk Saxophone Competition. These three were the finalists. Jazz competitions are dubious things but unfortunately have b...

Re: Branford Marsalis blindfold test
This discussion seems to have reached a conclusion of sorts, but I was reading a long interview of Ellery Eskelin and part of it was doing a sort of blindfold test of different versions of the tunes that were on Ellery's most recent organ trio album. What struck me was the difference in respect for ...

I think we could all be accused of that (me included). Don't avoid looking in the mirror on this one.

I haven't looked at the video yet, but when I went to the page I saw someone giving props to young Chilean Sax player Melissa Aldana. I happened to see Melissa perform at her CD release event at the Fat Cat a couple of years ago. I was very impressed with Melissa live and with her CD. I think she's...

Yet, conveniently, I was the only one charged with it. ;) Look, I really don't care why he chose that title. BUT, I also think it is wrong to impugn the man's integrity by making claims that cannot be substantiated. I didn't think anyone was impugning, at least that was not my take on it. You are c...

No, we're NOT marketing experts. Finally! Now then, WHO is arguing from a point of ignorance? Hint: you perfectly uncovered the logical fallacy. Not exactly, are you saying that only PhD's in marketing are qualified to recognize what is or is not marketing? Or are you using the modern usage of &quo...

Re: Branford Marsalis blindfold test
*yawn* Homage albums are done for marketing purposes. Jesus died for your sins. Sorry I can't prove that with a peer reviewed study. At least I gave some examples to back up why I think there could be a marketing purpose (I never said that it was solely for marketing nor did anyone else). Fundament...

Monk saxophone competition
Just came across this link on another board. Haven't had time to check it out yet, but there are several hours of the competition on video. Some pretty accomplished players in this year's competition.

Re: Branford Marsalis blindfold test
More faith-based rhetoric. I've asked twice for evidence and have only received "I can't believe that you don't believe" as a response. I'm not sure what you would accept as evidence. The argument doesn't mean enough to me to do an exhaustive review of the marketing literature to see if t...

Yeah, I guess I sort of lost my train of thought there. My overall point was that I do think that today's players are playing vital new music, but it isn't the players who are stuck in the past.

Re: Branford Marsalis blindfold test
My job is to write songs that have emotional meaning to me. Because I believe that if the songs have emotional meaning, that will translate to a larger audience that has the capacity to appreciate instrumental music, 'cause a lot of people don't. And I can't do anything to get them to like my music...

See, I can't imagine. Miles was a drug addicted fuck up who verbally and physically abused women. Does that change your opinion of his music? I'm not saying that it's a "rule" with me and, like I said, it's a sort of feeling that I associate with a person when I listen to them. I've read ...

Fuck what they say! It has no bearing on anything. On this I think we'll just have to agree to disagree. I'm not saying that I will be boycotting Branford (I have several of his recordings including his most recent and they do get some play) but for me the way I feel about an artist affects my perc...

Re: Branford Marsalis blindfold test
Eh, who cares? We don't listen to great music because it's made by model citizens. True, but I do find that most jazz/improvising musicians are generous people and I'm disappointed when confronted with one who isn't. I don't mind crusty, opinionated people and eccentricity somewhat comes with the t...
