Re: What Movies Are You Watching?

ANT-MAN and Recut, Remake, Ripoff. The first is fun enough for popcorn, lots of excellent and creative effects. Nice wisecracking by Paul Rudd. But it's also self-consciously shallow and silly, and the secondary premise is just ridiculous to me (mind you, not the premise that he can shrink to the si...

Re: What TV Shows Are You Watching?

Also just started True Crimes, Season 1. Actors are fantastic, pacing is a little slow for right now in my life. But I should stick with it, right?

Re: What TV Shows Are You Watching?

The board does look great! On a roll: Ascension, a badly-acted 6 part sci fi mini series with a very original plot and an excellent twist. An interesting failure. Halt and Catch Fire, an AMC series about people creating the personal computer. Mad Men esque, great cast and writing. Catastrophe--a cha...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching?

A southern CA stoner who is constantly lighting up gets sucked into a mysterious missing persons case, not to mention getting cold cocked every now and then? And there is a ton of money involved? And he becomes a suspect while he's trying to crack the case? And there's more to the disappearance than...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching?

I liked very much While We're Young, a dramady with Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts and Charles Grodin--great to see him again.

Really enjoyed parts of Inherent Vice, but in the end a frustrating, failed takeoff on The Big Lebowski.

One Year Ago Today!

One year ago today, I invited Denise Rosenfeld to have dinner with me. We had met exactly three times before--the first time was a week earlier at the La Cruz Market, where I tasted her delicious brownies for the very first time; the second was two nights later at a jam session in El Patio de Mi Cas...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching?

A warning, as opposed to a review: Chappie, the new film by the once-promising director of District 9, just blows. It's as if the script was merely taken from an outline (written by an idiot) and handed to performers as the camera was rolling, so no one had any time to think. Worst movie of the year...

Re: Jazz Videos

Here's a clip of Mexican jazz singer Iraida Noriega and me performing Hijo de la Luna with Roberto Falcón on bass, Jesús Estrada on drums and Dale Carley on trumpet. There was supposed to be a flute player for my arrangement, but he had food poisoning and had to be rushed to the ER 5 minutes before ...

Doug Robinson and Iraida Noriega PAINT THE TOWN!

I'll be reuniting with Mexican jazz singer Iraida Noriega, as well as 14 other terrific musicians for an evening of music to benefit Children's Art Foundation this Wednesday, March 25 at 8pm at the Teatro Angela Peralta in San Miguel de Allende, MX. Join us and pianist Ken Bichel, saxophonist Diego ...

Re: Retirement

Jwaggs--I will be 59.5 in March, but I'll still be taking $ from my IRA and paying taxes on it, without much income. It will be great to not have to pay the 10% penalty, though.

Re: Retirement

I'm probably better off than most, but not where I'd like to be. At one point, Glenda and I had amassed enough to retire (according to our investment counselor) 'if we played our cards right.' We did, over 10 years ago and I have loved almost every minute of it. But playing our cards right didn't in...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching?

The Theory of Everything--this is some excellent movie-making, I think. Heroic people that didn't actually have to shoot at anyone from 200 yards to earn that adjective.

Glenda Robinson R.I.P.

I am profoundly sad to let you know that my ex-wife Glenda has passed away. The cancer that we thought we'd beaten came back with a vengeance seven months ago and she and her partner Michael put up a tough fight. Though we've been separated for over 3 years, we stayed in contact and she told me last...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching?

Relatos Salvajes/Wild Tales I just saw this Argentinian movie last night--what a riot! You'll need subtitles--I would have been lost had I not had my Mexican gf helping me--but everything about it is perfect, the black humor, the photography, the music, the acting...it's 8 or 9 short vignettes, all ...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching?

That's a great recommendation, GG. I'll watch for it. Last night we saw Good People, a routine and mostly dull thriller with James Franco, Tom Wilkinson and Kate Hudson. Not worth anyone's time. It wasn't badly made, really--just ultra-predictable. I can't imagine anyone pitching this and having a s...
