Re: ECM & Eicher Win Awards

Ugh

And I bought a few

They don't capture the sound of either Tim Berne's fine Snakeoil band or Michael Formanek's wonderful quartet.

Both Ches Smith and Gerald Cleaver sound MUCH better live and on other labels

I want to hear the full sound of the drum kit and ECM these days doesn't get it done

Re: The Stone July 28th

plus the most important aspect of the show is that they had a TUBA in place of the bass which is in memory of one the Jazz Festivals that Thelil attended back in the late 90's where he imagined that EVERY band at that downtown show had a TUBA in place of the bass.

Re: The Stone July 28th

it's getting a bit hot in the infamous little room between sets despite the "newish" air conditioner working at full bore. And it's not even that hot out - maybe 70 degrees with showers and high humidity - but *nothing* like the place must have been 2 weeks ago whent he temperatures were i...

Re: Who doesn't like "mainstream" jazz?

Most jazz is museum music now. Coltrane died 45 years ago, miles nearly 22 years ago. The current crowd recreate to various degrees the excitement of earlier eras. Ther are some tremors of excitement in European new classical and avant but otherwise it's increasingly played by schooled musicians ad...

Re: Big Bands

for me historically nothing compares to Duke Ellington's band - especially for me the music recorded in the late 1950's through the 1960's. I have always been fascinated by larger ensembles with the most fascinating of all being Chris MacGregor's Brotherhood of Breath which existed in different pers...
