Re: Corky McClerkin, R.I.P.

A bright spot to this very sad story is that the musical tribute will be led by Corky's brother by another mother, the wonderful drummer, Curtis Prince.

Corky McClerkin, R.I.P.

So sad to report the death of my dear friend and wonderful pianist Corky McClerkin in Chicago on Sunday.

Re: Bruce Lundvall, President of Blue Note Records — R.I.P.

I had the opportunity to spend some time with Bruce quite a few years ago. He was a lovely man and very interested in furthering his artists' careers.

Ron, I noted your tag line... Eerily sad that Bob Belden died just the day after Bruce. :(

They will both be sorely missed in the Jazz community.

Re: Joey Alexander

Gary Walker interviewed him on WBGO last week, and he played live on the air. I have to say for one so young he plays with amazing maturity. As well, he seems to have some original ideas and is not just copying what he's heard others play. Anyone who's interested, you should be able to go to wbgo.or...

Re: Food For Thought

Saturday when I walked into Whole Foods, the Seafood Manager was butchering a Hawaiian Opah. I've never seen one on the East Coast before. Apparently he was in the early stages of his demo, and I was able to purchase one of the cheeks. I came home and cut it into six pieces. Last night I served hal...

Re: Natalie Cole

What an interesting discussion. Imho Mel doesn't fit as a jazz singer because everything he ever did - including his scats - was all written down. Listening to him live was like listening to his records. He always sang each song exactly the same way. Isn't Jazz about improvisation? He didn't improvi...

Re: Billy Eckstine

I don't have nearly as many of B's recordings as I'd like. He really had an extraordinary voice.

I was lucky to get to sit in with him in Chicago in the early 80's -- a neat memory.

Re: Retirement

At 62 I wasn't even thinking about retirement. and to tell the truth, I'm still not planning to "retire," except from my SDJ. I will definitely be actively doing something remunerative. May go back to teaching music, haven't figured it out yet.
