Re: What TV shows are you watching?

Chazro wrote:'Justified's OK, but it is so far removed in every quantifiable way from 'Deadwood' that it's beyond discussion!

This is true but it's fun! Some very funny dialog and the acting is terrific.

Scott Dolan wrote:So Deadwood is actually on Netflix now?

If so, great. I've wanted to check it out for years.

Not on streaming. Just DVD. I checked Amazon too for the hell of it and it's not available through Prime either (That's where I watched Justified and The Americans, among other things).

Re: What TV shows are you watching?

Top of the Lake, Orphan Black and The Americans. Of the three, I like Top of the Lake best. All good. I think, as far as pure enjoyment, I might have liked The Americans better but Top of the Lake was excellent. Did you see "The Fall"? That was another good one (I think it was Stone that ...

Re: What TV shows are you watching?

"When you have to rely on shock value like the train station scene, you're already telling me you're short on ideas, and big on cheap ploys. " usually yes. In this case, you'd be wrong. It was just a misstep. The show is quite brilliant, I think. I'm going to go back to it at some point. ...

Re: What TV shows are you watching?

Lenny - I would say after three in to Sons, if you don't like it, I doubt you will. For me it is a show I can take or leave. A bit formulaic. Speaking of spectacular, if you want to treat yourself to one of the best episodes of any drama (I've ever seen), check out Deadwood on Netflix, the finale o...

Re: What TV shows are you watching?

Hmmmm, I didn't find Breaking Bad's finale all that great. It was fine, and I was impressed how they wrapped up so much in such a short period of time, but...eh... I dig finales that have huge twists, like St. Elsewhere or Newhart. Most series finales tend to be somewhat of a let down. With Breakin...

Re: What TV shows are you watching?

It's interesting to see how so many well-scripted shows found/find it hard to sustain their original level of excellence. This is true. Even the Sopranos couldn't quite go the distance (even though the ending was more neutral to me than bad to me). That's what I loved about Breaking Bad. Went out w...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching? Part 1

I watched American Hustle last night. Wasn't too in to it. I prefer its close cousin, The Wolf of Wall Street. You'd have liked it much better if they didn't change the freaking ending ;). A polarizing bunch of films at the top of the pack last year. Films that some love while others don't get what...

Re: What TV shows are you watching?

I'm pretty bummed right now because I haven't been able to find a new series to watch on Netflix or Amazon streaming. What the hell am I going to do with the rest of my life? I finished the first season of Orphan Black, which had its moments. Before that I watched The Americans, which I very much en...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching? Part 1

Another oddity about American Hustle is the changes they made for marketing. I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but there's a point in the trailer where Jennifer Lawrence says something like "these people that you all are so afraid of look like the perfect people to buy me a drink". A...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching? Part 1

I saw American Hustle in the theater but the wife did not accompany me, so we just watched it last night on DVD. I have to say that I'm disgusted by the ending because it's different on the DVD. *Spoiler* Most people will think I'm crazy, which I am, but this small change irritates the shit out of m...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching? Part 1

Have never experienced 3D and don't have any desire to do so. If I want 3D I'll just stand here and open my frigging eyes. Film was never meant to be that "real". Yeah, twice now I've been fooled by critics saying that "this is the one you really need to see in 3D in the theater"...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching? Part 1

Gravity Quite possibly the biggest letdown I've ever experienced in a movie. Well, perhaps Avatar was worse. How some empty eye candy like that got nominated for 10 Oscars is far beyond me. Avatar is a pretty good comparison because it was very critically acclaimed and a let down for me as well (ot...

Blue is the Warmest Color To enjoy this film, you'd better enjoy watching Adele. Over the course of almost 3 hours, the camera is never away from her for very long. She's (I'll never remember or be able to pronounce the actress's last name) so obviously the director's muse and I think it comes acro...

Re: Trivial Annoyances

Enough with the effing "hashtag" already. I feel like I've heard the term like 300 times in the last week. Comedy routines, news stories, etc. Today, on the radio, they quoted someone's twitter post, which had a # in there two or three times and they felt the need to say "hashtag"...

I think it turned out to be just that.

We're four episodes into the new season. Last night, I pretty much daydreamed through 2 episodes. It's totally lost me now. My wife still likes it but I can't bring myself to waste any more time.

"My problem is with making the assumption that any particular man that goes for a young, but legal, woman is probably guilty of child molestation." That's fair. I think what is dicey and haunting though is that he didn't just meet Soon Yi when she was 18, 19 or 20, but knew her some years...

Re: Trivial Annoyances

I'm curious how people line up on the Roman Polansky affair. There, too, the documentarian ended up being extremely sympathetic to his subject's case. He convinced me that the trial was a travesty, anyhow. Totally different thing, IMO. Men (or many men, anyway) might be attracted to young w...

Re: Trivial Annoyances

Why not? Because I'd be taking a "believe the woman" stance, but with very little conviction---not enough to argue about (I mean "discuss") that unholy mess. Plus once I refuted the "he said" quotes with "she said" quotes, I'd be done. BTW, re...
