Re: And the site, she is dead.

Let me join the chorus of those who believe that this site has value, even if it is not always as active as we might hope, and would like to see it stay alive. But the perceived benefits obviously need to be weighed against the costs. So let's discuss the costs, both in terms of money and moderation...

Re: Let us deify Sonny Rollins

Got nothing against Rollins, but saying he's better than Coltrane is like saying Ford is better than Ferrari. "Better than" is of course silly at that level. But I would say that Rollins and Coltrane had very different strengths. To me Rollins had a kind of sardonic wit that is part and p...

Re: Let us deify Sonny Rollins

Not to mention the curious nature of Rollins giving up performing in public so he could woodshed for nearly three years once Coltrane became the prominent tenor player on the scene in '59. Hasn't Rollins himself come clean about being annoyed by all the accolades Coltrane had started receiving and ...

Chaz - Yes, Western Digital makes quality external drives for PCs. I would only strongly recommend again that you get at least two and back everything up. Western Digital external drives will fail eventually, and often without warning. There is no way to stop them from wearing out with use.

Re: Let us deify Sonny Rollins

.......... And yes, I own Tenor Madness and have indeed heard it many times. But the trading on the song Tenor Madness. I think Sonny cuts Trane. A bit of historical context here: When Tenor Madness was recorded, Coltrane had been with Miles for only a half a year, had been struggling with a heroin...

Re: Let us deify Sonny Rollins

As great as Rollins output was in second half of the 1950s, Stan Getz beat him out every year in the Down Beat Readers Poll for tenor saxophone player of the year. I guess that Rollins was thinking, "what more do I have to do?" ;) In some ways, I like 60s Rollins as much as 50s Rollins. Th...

Re: Apple music player alternatives

iTunes never fails to mess up my album art. Should be such a simple thing. I particularly hate the way that iTunes stores album cover art. They don't even keep the jpg files, but convert them into some other BS and then store them into numerous folders without any sort of legible labels or identifi...

Re: Apple music player alternatives

While I've heard endless tales of iTunes suckage, I've never had a glitch, go figure! I've never done cloud sharing or even a podcast but I haven't a clue whether that means anything. It certainly shouldn't, right? I do have a problem that, being computer illiterate, maybe one of you guys can sugge...

Re: Apple music player alternatives

And getting worse. iTunes 11.1 has been an abomination from roll out. Absolutely. iTunes 11 is a major deterioration from iTunes 10. I am really pissed off about it too. Most iTunes upgrades are for the worst. My biggest problem is that I have a very large collection. So iTunes freezes all the time...

My father took me to what may have been the first large rock festival, before Monterey Pop, Woodstock and all that: The Magic Mountain Rock Festival up on Mount Tamalpais - Summer of 67.

Light My Fire was hot on the charts, and I saw the Doors do it live there.

I go through periods of listening intensely to one particular jazz artist. Over the years, there are a few that I keep coming back to. The answer to the question of this thread is certainly Lester Young.

Re: Lou Reed - Rip

I'm wondering how many people here were listening to the Velvets when they were still together. I was a regular listener to FM rock and reader of Rolling Stone and other rock rags then and i don't recall knowing their music. I remember when I got to college in September '71 I saw a Velvet Undergrou...

Re: Lou Reed - Rip

I've been listening though my Velvet Underground and Lou Reed records in honor of the man. It just struck me - of course it may have struck many of you already a long time ago - that the Velvet Underground were both art rock before its time and punk rock before its time. What is amazing here is not ...

Now, throwing Jarrett in the mix.... nothing better than the Jarrett Trio with Peacock and DeJohnette..... Now there's a debatable assertion! It's obviously hard to quibble about the skills of any of those three. That each is a top-notch musician is un debatable. But to me, the whole is less than t...

Re: Corea or Hancock?

I'll join the pack here: Herbie Hancock for me. Both of them are absolute monsters on the keyboards. But ultimately Herbie reached higher artistic pinnacles, at least in the 60s through the mid-70s. His achievements from those years are just incredible, not taking anything away from Chick's great ea...

In his apology, Rosenwinckel is still making the same mistake that Tom pointed out in his first post. The McArthur Fellowship is not intended to be given to who critics, musicians, and anybody think are the "best" musicians. It is given to people who are believed to have an expectional cap...
